The idea of D’Journeys began to take root many years ago when a young student mother cradled her sleeping toddler in a dark car, on a dark knight, and wondered just how she was going to make everything work….finishing the last year of her bachelor’s degree…dealing with a disintegration of a six year long marriage that had never quite worked out for her…only able to find a part-time job that wasn’t enough to convince landlords that she could cover the rent….sleeping in her car, motels, on couches and floors….and showing up to class and work with no one ever seeming the wiser.
That young mother was me. My name’s Demetria, but most people just call me D. I am a single mother living in Northern California. I’ve worked in higher education for over a decade, generally as a supervisor working with student employees. I entered the higher education system as a first generation, low-income, underrepresented student. I graduated high school in the top 2% of my class with a 3.9 GPA, went to a very reputable California public university as a track & field athlete and scholar right out of high school….and by the 2nd year of my pre-med study had been academically dismissed by the university. Then life happened…
Today, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology, and it took me every bit of 8 years to complete it. I was homeless with a child the last year of my study, but I pushed through until I graduated. I am currently a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) with a Master’s in Counseling, Higher Education in Student Affairs and am planning to enter a doctorate program that focuses on both of these areas in the near future.
I’ve spent the last decade advising, counseling, mentoring and supporting underrepresented and at risk students whom are struggling to finish their educational plans. It was while working with these adult students that I inadvertently found my own path. I loved unearthing these students’ talents and passions, helping them to embark on paths that would allow them to live life purposefully, and watching the academic, career and personal transformations that inevitably followed once they allowed themselves permission to pursue that which brought them the greatest joy. I realized that many of these students were failing out of the education system or remaining totally unfulfilled in their careers post-graduation due to lack of knowledge of their true purpose or passion and inability to simultaneously manage so many academic, career and life concerns. This lack of purposeful pursuit of higher education can cause great anxiety, and during difficult semesters can leave a student wondering why they even bothered to keep trying.
Succeeding in post-secondary educational endeavors is one of the best ways to elevate struggling adults and their families. There aren’t many careers you can do post-high school that does not require some form of education whether that be vocational training, upgrading your business skills, a college degree or certification, or an apprenticeship. If one can navigate the higher education system effectively and then actively put to use the skills they’ve learned, there is no limit to how far you can elevate and transform yourself, your family, and your community.
When I’m not flying around in my cape, acting like superwoman and challenging adult students to desire more, be more and succeed more in their lives….I am a complete introvert that loves to spend time with my daughter going swimming, hiking, camping and tending to the edible garden in the backyard of our 1920s home. I am utterly comfortable with silence and enjoy my solitude, and while I may love to write novels and short stories I’m not likely to let others read them anytime soon. You might find me attending live music venues, musical theater, choral performances and karaoke because that’s definitely my idea of a good time! Life is a journey, filled with transformational periods, but it’s not one that you must always travel alone. Sometimes it takes a village to see you safely through the difficult parts and on to bigger, brighter, better things. This year I have the opportunity to take my own transformational journey and do what I love full time! So, I look forward to working with college students, as well as pre- or post-graduates, to design the life YOU want to live!
